Frequently asked questions

From Kathryn…

what type of therapy do you do?

In terms of client populations, I see individuals ages 12 and up, and hold with a special focus on men and men’s issues. Additionally, I have extensive experience in relationship counseling, and work well in the frameworks of couples or partnered relationships and with family dynamics. I encourage nontraditional relationship dynamics to join me in the therapy room - renegotiating parenting roles, challenging roommate experiences, conflicts within business partnerships, it’s all welcome.

My theoretical approaches are rooted in existential philosophy, analysis, and social construction, while my practice is often directive and discussion-based. I often utilize a mix of Socratic questioning, some educating, and more structured techniques, such as solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, and cognitive-behavioral protocols. I have found these pairings to be highly effective in bridging deeper identity or purpose-driven work to more active or performance-based changes.

Can i try out a free consultation?

I understand that getting started with this kind of work can be overwhelming, and a bit nerve-wracking, so brief, 15-minute phone consultations are available for new clients, as scheduling allows. The aim of these calls is to determine, for both of us, the best fit for your needs.

If you are interested in exploring a coaching or facilitation/training dynamic, 30-minute consultations may be available based on your need.

What’s the cost per session? Can I utilize my insurance?

The standard rate for 50-minute individual therapy is $165, couples or family sessions are $195. 90-minute sessions are available for either service, billed at 1.5x the rate.

A limited number of individual spots are available for those needing a reduced rate, at request, and determined on a case-by-case basis (subsidized rate of $145, or hand-up rate of $125 for those in historically underpaid professions or actively in school/training programs, both supplemented by clients paying the full rate). In addition, I offer a significantly reduced rate of $50 reserved for elder adults on a fixed income; this rate is not limited. Please request this rate if needed.

Insurance is not accepted, by design; I do not conceptualize counseling through the diagnostic lens required by the medical model/to utilize health insurance directly. My intention and approach with this work is to build a deeply personal framework for thinking about our experiences and our traumas not just as pathology, but as existential dislocation. The insurance model does not support this approach.

Superbills (receipts) may be available to clients wishing to utilize Out Of Network benefits through their insurance plan, if it will create more accessibility. If you have interest, questions, or concerns about this practice, please contact your insurance company first.

Rates for consultation, training, and facilitation are determined jointly during our initial consult meeting and are similar to the outlined therapeutic rate.

what can i expect from our first session?

Your first session will be a bit longer than a standard session, 90 minutes total. We’ll go through a fairly structured questionnaire together to help us a tap into different components of your story and begin to get to know one another, and you will have a chance to ask any questions you may have of me. From there we’ll jointly discuss wants and needs around goals, intentions, and scheduling as we move forward. If it makes sense to you and your work, you may leave with some homework.

How exactly do we meet?

For clients based in Missouri, sessions are currently offered virtually and in-person, depending on client/therapist preference and scheduling need. Sessions for clients based in New Hampshire are exclusively online.

From Caitlin…

what is a Counseling Intern /Counselor-in-training?

I am in the final stages of my Master’s program in counselor education prior to graduation and obtaining my provisional license: 600 hours of supervised clinical practice and training. Under Kathryn’s guidance and direct supervision, I am refining my therapeutic approach and developing a sense of my professional identity, all while providing quality, ethical, competent care to a wide variety of clients.  And for those prospective clients, this dedicated internship time allows me to offer a significant level of care and dedication as my caseload grows, with the added benefit of services at reduced cost. I am honored to be growing and serving in my own hometown community, and am grateful to all of the clients who have entrusted me with their care thus far.

what type of therapy do you do?

My therapeutic approach is holistic, meaning I seek to address not only your mental and emotional well-being, but also the physical and environmental factors that influence your everyday life. A key goal I hold as your therapist is to help you define and create a more whole, fully-realized version of yourself, one that aligns your values, relationships, and goals. Creating a whole sense of self is at the core of my therapeutic lens, internal family systems. This is supplemented with narrative therapy, as we build understanding of your life story, we can better center ourselves as the main protagonist of our own lives.

I am currently prioritizing individual clients, ages 18+, although I do have limited spots available for family and relationship counseling.

The core of meaningful, successful work together is a strong relationship between therapist and client. To assess the best fit for your needs,  I do offer initial 15-minute phone or video consultations, as scheduling allows.

what can i expect from our first session?

Our first session together will be 90 minutes, as this will allow us plenty of time to get to know one another. We will discuss your personal and family background, your goals for therapy, and any barriers outside of sessions that may make personal growth difficult. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you have, and arrange scheduling if you feel this is a good fit.
